Microdisney – Town To Town

While Microdisney were a little before my time and Cathal Coughlan and his Fatima Mansions were just too aggressive to be palatable there is no doubting the beauty of ‘Town To Town’. Must have been his Coughlan’s mate Sean O’Hagan’s (Stereolab and his own High Llamas) west coast leanings that supplied a bona fide chorus to sing along to. That and a video that was made for tuppence meant that it could only have been come out of 2 lads from emigration ravaged 1980’s Ireland (Cork to be precise). And despite the sucrose melody the theme of the tune revolved around a nuclear war, something to think about as you sing along on your dozen rerun this evening. KD

I love this tune and Microdisney (who were also just before my time), but The Fatima Mansions were the first band I was really really really into. In between the moments of anger and aggression there were moments of great beauty, although I guess they were also pretty angry… I’m going to dig some out now. Thanks for the inspiration.

Great tune. I was rinsing out a load of cathal coughlan recently. I only remember this tune and ‘gale force wind’ from Microdisney, my older brother was into them. On an unrelated note i was buying my lunch today and ‘half past two’ by the stunning was on. fuck that ‘brewing up a storm tune’ but ‘half past two’ is the business.

Great band.I can’t believe that Crooked Mile is out of print. It was one of the best albums of that time.
