Jonquil – Lily

Feeling a little bit shortchanged by the new Animal Collective album? Well, help is at hand from the Oxford collective known as Jonquil. Led by the frighteningly young Hugo Manuel their second album ‘Lions’ has slipped by almost unnoticed, which is a shame because it is never less than a ravishing listen. Cradled in experimentation but not requiring a degree in indietronica to crack its melodic code ‘Lions’ is capable of snaging the listener’s affections almost immediately. The mosaic of sound that seeps from ‘Lily’ is a typical example of their majesty, a banshee beat without the scares. You can then factor in an emotional edge that can in some cases be downright draining. If you need to have your faith restored in music then the best advice I can give you is to throw yourself to the Lions. KD
