Power Of Dreams – Cancer

I do hope that some day I will feel the same way I do about the music that appeared between 1989 and 1993 as I do about contemporary music. For me that will always be the tranche of time when indie appeared at its most fertile. It always delights then when I happen upon an undiscovered piece of magic from that period. I spotted this gilded gem on a podcast just the other day. ‘Cancer’ was a b-side to Dublin’s Power of Dreams 1991 single ‘Stay’ (it also appeared on the Japanese Import of ‘2 Hell With Common Sense’). At this point the Clondalkin outfit were being courted by all and sundry and had already established a huge fan base in both Ireland and Japan. Their debut ‘Emigrants, Immigrants and Me’ was a lavish affair by a group of teenagers in the throes of rampant creativity. The energy and sense of melody was utterly convincing and listening to ‘Cancer’ just highlights what a prospect they were shaping up to be. As it turned out their debut was as good as it got, future albums contained some fabulous singles but the precocious instinct of their first-born was never quite recaptured. KD
