Today I inflated a plastic hammer. Giovanni Trapattoni has agreed to take over the crumbling artefact known as the Irish Football team with the expressed intention of taking us to tournaments (and maybe even more if we don’t wake up from this incredible dream). The last couple of years have been so hard to take; limp performances, gormless victories and a consistent policy of dropping points against inferior opposition. Trap has certainly got something to work with as there are some promising players coming through. That and the fact that he still feels he has something to prove at international level (his home country of Italy have been drawn in Ireland’s qualifying group) should ensure we have some good times to look forward to. So best of luck to you Trap, we’ll be drowning the shamrock to celebrate your birthday next month (Paddy’s day as it happens!). KD
