Dinosaur Feathers – Please, Please George

Every so often a song comes along that’s so infectious, so all-consuming that I just can’t get it out of my head. That’s a good thing, right? It took one listen for Dinosaur Feathers’ new track ‘Please Please George” to draw me in, and I found myself playing it over and over again. And why not? It’s a perfect storm of sonic touchstones: Beach Boys inspired harmonies, a beat that shimmies and sways like a golden-era 45, and a skronky guitar freakout that wouldn’t be out of place on a Pavement record. To summarize, it flat out cooks.

The song chronicles George, who’s struggling to finish the next Great American novel despite a nasty case of writer’s block and pressure from the suits at the publishing house. The suits suspect George of squandering his advance and plead with him, “five years is too long”. It’s a wickedly inventive song, full of hooks and charm, and as an added bonus, it’s deliciously danceable.

Right now Dinosaur Feathers are putting the finishing touches on their new record, and if ‘Please, Please George’ is any indication it is going to be amazing. You can catch them on tour this month in the US.

Excellent song, but you should probably point out that it is very clearly a dig at the author George R.R. Martin, in relation to his series “A Song of Ice and Fire” since it’s took him 5 years to write book 4 in the series, and now 6 years to write book 5. The series is currently being filmed by HBO in Northern Ireland, and called Game of Thrones (the tagline for the tv show, “Winter is Coming” is even part of the chorus in this song).

The song works so well though because you can enjoy it without knowing the specific literary references.
