The World Cup has been on so long I’ve almost forgotten how it feels not to be in awe of 22 men running around after a spherical leather object. The concept is almost daft when you think about it, how an obsession could be conjured from such lowly constructs. So instead of confusing matters I generally don’t think it through and instead lap up the drama, intrigue, feigning and finely crafted natural talent. It will mean an awful lot if little Lionel runs the show this evening to bring football home to Buenos Aires to the strains of ‘Brasil decime qué se siente’ but then as things stand it is in the balance. Whatever happens the beauty of sport and its ability to temporary sideline the language of everyday life has been dramatically emphasised over the last month at Brasil 2014. KD
