While the jury may well be out on the relative worth of Manchester duo Alpinestars (their ‘White Noise’ album of 2002 gets a scathing Pitchfork reaction while allmusic lauds its ‘wonderful melodies’) there is no doubting their effectiveness on their stronger workouts. ‘Cresta La Wave’ is a purpose built jolt of digital happiness from their debut ‘B.A.S.I.C’. The gurgling rhythms continually pulse energetically while the incomprehensible female vocals dance a merry jig. You can hear the Kraftwork influences creeping in as well as more contemporary electro engineers such as Add N To (X) and Orbital but ‘Cresta La Wave’ spins along so eloquently that most of the kudos must be awarded to its ingenious makers.
