I used to do a radio show and one of the recurring themes was an attempt to prove that the 1980’s wasn’t as totally awful as most people had thought. In fact if you looked hard enough you could put together a fairly inspiring double CD without resorting to usual over make-upped suspects. Fiction Factory’s ‘(Feels Like) Heaven’ would certainly have to be included and despite replicating the sound of the day it still packs a punch, especially the grand piano riffs that resonate throughout. Kevin Patterson’s vocals resemble Phil Oakey’s and despite some paunchy drumming the rhythm section drives the piece while in the background the drifting synths provide able gravitas. Fiction Factory never moved beyond this song in sales terms and as warning to all would be artists Patterson is currently working in the IT Department of Dundee University. No doubt he spends much time twiddling with all manner of electronic devices to recapture the near forgotten sound of new wave. KD

The 80s had far better music than most of the crap (aka rap) that’s out there now. Especially since most of the rap stars can’t actually sing or play an instrument.
Just about to dig out some Milli Vanilli records…
