Mogwai – Hunted By A Freak

I have an album from Mogwai called ‘Ten Rapid’ and apart from being an absolutely thrilling listen it also has killed my appetite for new records from the band. If you don’t know the story by now, Mogwai are from Glasgow and are at the forefront of the post-rock movement. Post-rock doesn’t involve words, just elegantly textured montages involving guitars that often spill over into ear splitting avalanches of noise. When it’s done well this format can be deeply affecting (as anyone who has ever heard an Explosions in the Sky record can testify), on the flipside there is nothing more grating than a 10-minute sonic ramble with little or no purpose. ‘Ten Rapid’ is Mogwai’s early movements distilled and remains their creative high point, nothing else does them justice. Of course there have been pots of treasure along the way (‘Mogwai Fear Satan’, ‘Ex-Cowboy’, ‘Kids Will Be Skeletons’) and ‘Happy Songs For Happy People’ is one of Mogwai’s more coherent records. ‘Hunted By A Freak’ closed off that work in the cleverest possible way. With the slightest hint of trace vocal it forages and uncovers deposits of cerebral melody. Not that you notice initially though, the fruits of the bands intensity is only evident after several visits. At that point you’ll appreciate what Mogwai are ultimately capable of delivering, an untouchable force of feeling. KD
