Such an even keel, how does Ned Collette manage to keep it so uniformly straight when the obvious move would be to let rip or at the very least add some lush strings. I may be wrong but the Melbourne based artist sounds all the world like a less frenetic Gilbert O’Sullivan (less helium perhaps) and for this we should be very thankful. ‘The Country With A Smile’ is the lead track from Collette’s second album ‘Future Suture’ and quietly goes about its business in a most seductive way. You’ll feel like little is happening but all the while this cunningly hushed tune will rein you in. Before you know it, it will be on endless repeat where the subtleties inherent in a chorus that slightly raises the decibels suddenly becomes the work of genius. Perfect with a pair of woollen slippers, a warm pipe and an atlas of the world. KD
