With a name like Kaitlyn Ni Donavan the singer with the High Violets most certainly has some Irish blood in her. And that’s even before you hear her ethereal outpourings that remind one of a young cranberry. The High Violets may slavishly pour over the work of the best exponents of shoegaze (MBV, Slowdive, Lush) but they frequently find the means to shed new light on that most exotic of genres. They are currently working on a new album but in an attempt to fill the void their label Reverb Records has commissioned a series of remixes from their back catalogue. Ulrich Schnauss is responsible for the reworking of ‘Chinese Letter’, which you can also here in its original guise. Both versions are enticing but as an exercise in drinking from a well that has long since dried up Schnauss manages to go beyond the wetting of lips. Atmospheric and characterised by a tumbling electronic momentum this should keep fans of the scene that celebrated itself happy just for a day (and possibly quite longer). KD
