Anaïs Mitchell – Flowers (Eurydice’s Song)

Righteous Babe Records ain’t so called for no particular reason as it is home to a bevy of serious female artists. Chief amongst them is Erin McKeown, Ani DiFranco and this Vermont singer songwriter Anaïs Mitchell. Now, I wouldn’t be one for soaking up a full afternoon of this sort of material but now and then it hits the spot. Anaïs Mitchell is particularly unique owing to her vocal style which is just one stop short of employing a quiver. With skills as fine as these it makes the job for the music all that more difficult to not be intrusive but ‘Flowers (Eurydice’s Song)’ features such textured sounds it merely highlights the star ingredient. You’d expect nothing different from someone whose insights into how Greek mythology can make for great contemporary folk opera. Heavy stuff all told but extremely diverting all the same. KD
