I’m a great believer in the notion that you can tell a lot from the name a band chooses for itself. So using this hypothesis I’m figuring the Smiles come from sunny California, play vibrant indie pop, write lyrics that are polar to the music and practise their songs as close to the beach as possible. And wouldn’t you know it, their ‘Hermosa’ EP ticks all the boxes with aplomb. Of course it all sounds like it was recorded in a shoebox but then it helps that the foursome are such a tight jangling outfit. Young lads too so imagine what’ll happen when they wipe the sand from their feet and make a record about the countryside. They’ll have to change their name to the Frowns for one. KD
