It was always a battle between ‘George Best ‘and ‘Seamonsters’ for me. And no that’s not a reference to the fallout from another footballers post alcohol haze it’s more a toss up between the Wedding Present’s two best albums. ‘George Best’ had the urgency, the utterly unique playing and a super kind of naivety. ‘Seamonsters’ was lots more polished (that’d be Albini), had some very big tunes and included my favourite Wedding Present song ever ‘Dalliance’. So rather than go through the same internal conflict I’ve been going through since 1991 here is the superb ‘Rotterdam’ which closed side A of the later album in typically jangly fashion. But, before the chiming parts you’ll witness Gedge in typical mumbling fashion getting soppy over another girl who discovered he wasn’t the man for her. A true convertible. KD
