Castle Thunder – The Observer

One of my favorite discoveries of late has been Milwaukee indie rock quartet Castle Thunder. Their track “The Observer” is an exercise in full-band dynamics, building from a slow simmer of sustained keyboard notes to a full-on rolling boil, making it a mainstay on my early summer playlists. I’m a total sucker for the infectious “whoa-oh” hook that anchors the piece, but what really gives the track its staying power in subsequent listens is the propulsive drumming of Moe Akhter and the the tightly-wound, highly nuanced riffing of guitarist Cory Gorman. Much like fellow Wisconsinites Maritime, Castle Thunder cranks up the fist-pumpable, head-bopping, danceable indie-rock. Count this in as an early favorite for those obligatory “Best of 2011” lists.
