Austin’s the Black Angels were summoned from the dogged influence of the Velvet Underground. So much so that they called themselves after a song from ‘…And Nico’ and have employed a series of vintage instruments to recreate the spirit of the age. This is a track from their most recent effort ‘Phosphene Dream’ and boasts a litany of hallucinogenic devices. There is more than a scent of the Doors in the air and a barely concealed undercurrent of menace. The song also takes a permanent detour when you least expect it to, shaking whatever notions you might have harboured for a truly laidback stoner 4 minutes. KD
