Belle & Sebastian – Seeing Other People

If You're Feeling Sinister

Given that this blog is now in its 8th year it seems completely bonkers that I’ve sidestepped the action of ever posting this song. At the time of its release this Glasgow band had me in their grip, they could do nothing wrong as their mysterious aversion to revealing who they were, their witty little notes that came in that almost hidden way on the inserts of their EP’s and of course the majesty, and childlike/genius simplicity, of their music. It took me a little while to catch on to what ‘If You’re Feeling Sinister’ was saying, but boy once the penny dropped I was theirs forever more (well, at least until I lost them quite a few albums back). The twin towers that were the opening to this album were just the perfect finale before we hit the Saturday night air. ‘Stars of Track and Field’ was our anthem (oh those trumpets) and ‘Seeing Other People’ was our motivation. It remains pristine, lyrics still resonating despite the shift to true adulthood and the realisation that nowadays I am not nearly the most important person in my little world. Little did I know the good times were yet to come. KD
