A gentle kind of romp, lots stirring in the background but you could take ‘Ten Foot Breakers’ at a superficial level and just get with its calm exterior. Looking into the narrative though and you can feel the turbulence and it makes for a bracing experience. This is how to cajole us into action without drowning us in too much theatre. Really liked how the track burst into flavoursome chorus from out of nowhere, but for those reading the subtle signs it was probably clear something was about to take place. California’s JJ Byars moves beyond mere folk rock here and into early evening jazzscapes and it means he has plotted a mini opus to get those tingles firing, a grower to reward the patient listener.
