You just can’t help hearing the heartbreak here, the way Old Friends hardly get out of first gear but manage to convey all that melancholy in a dreampop manner that soothes our 90’s loving inclinations. ‘Backburner’ builds steadily to a point where the orchestral embellishment doesn’t feel at all like a surprise because Old Friends appear to be the ambitious kind. They wear their hearts on their sleeves and what a beautiful kind of romanticism emerges as a result. KH
