‘Single Cell’ is marked by a minimalism and a melancholy to go with it so that it feels like we are suspended in a state of levitation. And that is such a difficult orientation to articulate, especially in a piece of music that has grounds for making its way dancefloor side. London’s Darkstates are cerebral sorts, no doubt about it and this mechanical work boasts more humanity than you would have thought possible. I was reminded of Vangelis but only after he had passed through the glitch vortex, while retaining a vision for something entirely tunesome. KH
