Gomez – Airstream Driver
Could they have finally rediscovered their mojo? Maybe or maybe not as I haven’t heard Gomez’s newbie ‘A New Tide’ yet apart from this excerpt. My optimism is tempered by what has gone on before but ‘Airstream Driver’ has a certain joie-de-vivre that has been missing from their artillery. Their debut ‘Bring It On’ was undeniably a classic record yet everything else they’ve recorded since has failed spectacularly to live up to that early billing. ‘Airstream Driver’ is deft, bedecked in youthful vigour and reminiscent of the baggy shapes thrown by old tracks like ‘Whippin’ Piccadilly’. It might lose some of its spark towards the end but there’s no denying that the Southport lads have a newfound pep in their step. KD
