Seems our Jessie is a chronicler of the human condition and I for one am tuned in to her missives. She occupies a less hostile space than Aimee Mann but in essence the pair are a very close match sonically. ’31’ is a lovely ballad that serialises the emotions of a past it has-been (only joking) on the cusp of becoming old. I struggled myself, it can be a difficult time but hearing it sung so prettily helps in understanding that you’re not alone. The song is well produced with undoubted mainstream appeal but never resorts to cliché or schmaltz. KD
