Justin Vernon only took a sabbatical in a log cabin to make a record but Breathe Owl Breathe live their whole lives in one in deepest Michigan. They also trump sad Mal in the music department which while always sounding polished has a uniquely home-baked quality. The Home Tapes label picked up on the trio for their 5th album ‘Magic Central’ and what a delight it proved to me. BOB’s love of nature is obvious and they construct their ditties with careful attention and subtle craft. Andréa Moreno-Beals evokes Stina Nordenstam all over ‘Across The Loch, a sweet and fragile flower of a tune that perfectly conveys what is dispatched in the lyrics. If luck goes their way the days of who-o-o, who-o-o should be well behind Breathe Owl Breathe. KD
