Zee Avi – Swell Window
Zee Avi is a Malaysian singer/songwriter with a penchant for the ukulele, an unusual juxtaposition but one that works in quite a magical way. So much so that Koko Kaina has caught the attention of some big wigs and now releases records (like her recent LP ‘Ghostbird’) with a bit more fanfare than might have been possible a few short years earlier. Let’s hope the spectre of dollars won’t tarnish what is a genuine talent, one that is as hushed as can be. Stina Nordenstam comes to mind but Zee Avi’s music is probably more immediate and ultimately more marketable. This delight is the opening track from ‘Ghostbird’. KD
