It’s a measure of the Chipmunks way with a melody that several decades after they first released this Christmas chestnut that it should return in glorious indie technicolour via Captured Tracks’ Catwalk (run by a not so high-heeled Nick Hessler). Of course this is the silly season, so I’m not being entirely honest, but this song has always achieved a certain resonance despite the helium fuelled protagonists involved. Catwalk does little to change the direction or momentum of the base material, save for bringing a Candy Claws sound to proceedings. The net result is half a dozen repeat plays in the last half hour and an expected similar quantity (or more) in the next half. It’s Christmas so we won’t stop. KD
