Tracey Thorn – Taking Down The Tree

Both Tracey Thorn and Cerys Matthews (Catatonia) have released Christmas albums this year and in many ways it is a quite luxury to have such respected lady’s devote themselves to a much maligned genre. The good news is that both ‘Tinsel & Lights’ and ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside’ are triumphs. Each is quiet and acoustic in nature but while Matthews has set her stall out on a younger audience Thorn’s songs have a much broader reach. The standout track for me is the former Everything But The Girl’s reworking of Low’s ‘Taking Down The Tree’ (I know, you haven’t even put it up yet, me neither) with Green Gardside of Scritti Politti providing the starkly contrasting vocals. Contemplating a reworking of such a Christmas classic is a risky pursuit but Thorn emerges triumphant while retaining the softly focused dialogue of the original. The colourfully lit hearth will beckon you forth. KD
