Yorkston, Thorne and Khan – Song For Thirza

If you are in the market for some spellbinding cross-genre musical melting pots you have come to the right place as remotest Scotland holds hands and slowly dances with the exotic Far East. Lal Waterson’s 1970 folk classic ‘Song For Thirza’ is patched together beautifully with Suhail Yusuf Khan on sarangi, Cavan’s Lisa O’Neill shyly expelling the words, Yorkston weaving his patented forlornness and the deep bass beaming in from the hands of jazz artist John Thorne. This is understated storytelling but the tale being weaved is hard to shake, probably as much because the playing and textures are so beguiling. It could play all day and your thirst for its languidness will hardly be sated. KD
