Ampop – Distance

You know the sage by now. Kooky sugarcube, cool capital city, imaginative national folklore, leaves, geysers, a nice mum, a propensity for alcohol, post-rock visionaries with silly hats. Yep, Iceland has brought much to the world and they are at it again with Ampop. The central characters met when they were just nippers but curiously didn’t start making music together until their late teens. They’ve released a couple of records at home but ‘My Delusions’ is the first one to cause ripples further afield. Things have been looking good of late with appearances at SXSW and support slots with the Zutons and KT Tunstall but much will swing on how ‘My Delusions’ is received. ‘Distance’ is a prime cut from the album. You could quite easily tune out during its quiet asides but that would mean missing a wonderfully realised chorus that opines a sense of longing through fine crystallised melody. It will stop you in your snow tracks, start you welling up and wishing you hadn’t thrown that girls number away. The past was okay, the future looks dramatic. KD
