From time to time a celebrity death affects me. Generally I am over it within a day or two but the news of Steve Irwin’s death will take longer. The man was so full of life and so passionate about what he did it was impossible not to admire him. We visited his Zoo on the East Coast of Australia a couple of years ago and it was obvious how much he was respected and loved not only by his family and friends but by everyone he came into contact with. Sure, he sometimes lost the run of himself like on the hugely misjudged feeding croc while cradling baby display in 2004, however, what was never in doubt was that Irwin was motivated not by greed but by an intense love for protecting the world’s animals. May he rest in peace. KD
