‘High Places vs. Mankind’ is Mary Pearson and Rob Barber’s second proper album as High Places. The duo boast a tropical sound, proposing suitable vignettes for that long summer holiday. ‘On Giving Up’ marks a slight shift in sound, affording a greater focus on the central theme rather than wrapping it under multiple layers of electronica. And it really is a winner; the riff is instantly memorable which leaves Pearson with the handy task of adding her trademark wispy vocals. High Places go about their business quietly and are making the slow transition towards greatness. Going places more like. KD
