[Undercovered] Fredrick And The Golden Dawn – Splinter

| Undercovered is a new series where our favourite musicians wax lyrical about a song they think is deserving of more attention |

By Neil Smyth (The Gorgeous Colours)

Frederick and The Golden Dawn, the musical guise of Kevin Nolan, wasn’t the first band I thought of for ‘Undercovered’. Perhaps that is proof that they fit the bill better than anyone! Having had a loose, mostly cyber friendship with the band since our own humble beginnings on Myspace back in 2006 or so, I have yet to come across another Irish artist with a sound as unique and powerful as Nolan’s. Taken from their debut EP ”Here’s A Piece Of Ivan’s Head”, ‘Splinter’ weaves a dark tale of secrecy and murder through call and response vocals. The softly tangled verses are wedged apart by dense layers of minimal guitar and sparsely syncopated drums. If Steve Reich did a gothic remix of ‘Scarborough Fair’, he might have ended up with something close!

Kevin Nolan is a bit of an oddity, an amazing talent and Splinter is a masterful song.

Splinter is amazing, even if I listen to it several times in a row, it still packs a punch. Good choice, a unque and powerful track.
