Such a texture to the ambient flow here, dreampop for sure a la the original Twin Peaks theme but something more too for this singer is giving away a lot more than Laura’s theme did. The overriding mood is one of heartbreak (and for that composers Phil Danyew and Taylor Johnson must be applauded) and it is powerful stuff but never overwhelming as Wave System are just showing us how it is. It gets to a crescendo a la Sigur Ros and that is a neat distraction from all the introspection. A modern movement then, classically structured but without employing the usual tools of that age old musical trade. Fans of Mercury Rev’s ‘Deserter’s Songs’ rejoice. KH
