Justin Sconza – Upside Down World

The first thing that struck me about ‘Upside Down World’ was how tropical it was, shorn of encumbrance so that the words are dished out without filter and though there are plenty of home truths it feels like the most gentle of experiences imaginable. This is folk, like we used to remember when we’d pull up a chair beside the turntable and dream of being elsewhere – where life offered a more vivid colour to one’s day. ‘Upside Down World’ is an obvious choice for a single on Justin’s new LP ‘Parlor’ because it is fuelled by sunshine, a summer heart that acknowledges the rough but has opted to accord us a few minutes of heartfelt smooth. In other words this is music to turn the listener’s day around, chests puffed up because for once we get to hear the wonder of what is possible at first hand. And all done with such sucrose vocal melodies that will at the very least be hummed in unison by all who come into contact with it. Reminds me of Sean O’Hagan and the High Llamas with some Mojave 3 in there too. Perfect. KH
