Vital Sparks – Just a Shape

It was to Thom Yorke’s sibling Andy and his act the Unbelievable Truth that ‘Just A Shape’ catapulted my memory banks. Given this Melbourne band’s list of influences (Blur, Pavement, Guided By Voices) I probably wasn’t all that far off the mark either but Vital Sparks are nothing if not a subtle bunch. Sure they have presence but this track of theirs is a true slow burner. The patience is worth it because the playing and grooves are exemplary, in fact ‘Just A Shape’ comes across as polished as the alternative scene gets. Not without its fire and brimstone too though, a vital quality for longevity. KH
