What a very interesting project, one that is unsurprisingly full of life, love and regret but even with the narrative of a cross country cycle across a continent it takes some talent to turn it into sweet audio. And ‘James’ is most certainly that, a heartbreaker that is nonetheless imbued with a sense of hope. The kind you get from Sufjan Stevens but appears here in Charles Van Kirk form, soft and hushed and ready to envelop us with stories from the road that have constituency wherever we call home. I was reminded of Joy Zipper at times but most of all the grand lush romance of Charles Van Kirk’s own making is what sets this track apart. KH
