#192 Camera Obscura – Anti-Western

Occupying the same territory both physically and musically as Belle & Sebastian means that Camera Obscura have had to go about their business in an imposing shadow. That’s what makes their music such a delicious surprise, like the B & S secret club back in the old days. ‘Anti-Western’ boasts so many treats it could wander into an indie greatest hits without much trouble. Not surprisingly Stuart Murdoch sat in on production so as well as getting a top boy/girl vocal interplay you can sink into the swinging strings that so enrich the sound. Then there are jangling chords which piece the whole thing together perfectly and Tracyanne Campbell’s bittersweet words which could have come from another swooning chanteuse of the same name. Just perfect for those who might have got disenchanted by the pursuit of life. KD

I’m one of those who got disenchanted by the puruit of life. I’d rather just get out of this country.

I BEG TO DISAGREE! THE LIFE PURSUIT IS AN EXCELLENT ALBUM. BELLE AND SEBASTIAN NEVER DISAPPOINTS.

Oh the controversy of it all! Apart from Act of The Apostle, the lastest B&S ain’t doing anything for me – good stuff with the magic taken out.
