New Fast Automatic Daffodils – Big

Time to step into the delorean and take a trip down nostalgia way. New Fast Automatic Daffodils are our first pit stop off in Manchester towards the late eighties. As was the way things operated up North New Fads were quickly usurped into the Madchester scene of the time. And a cursory listen to ‘Big’ gives credence to their inclusion as the tune contains enough baggy accessories to fill another Bez retrospective CD. There’s the primitive beats flying close to rave territory and a bouncing bass line that could power small villages. The vague pronouncements from Andy Spearpoint spoken in gruff Northerness may have intimated a Mark E Smith or Ian Curtis influence yet the vocals were surrounded by enough colourful bells and melodica’s to effectively banish the potential melancholy. Period piece it may be but a rather fine one for those who were around at the time to see it hatch. KD
