Oh, this is a surprise. Last time we listened Belong were wholly instrumental and making gorgeous in the wake of the horrors of hurricane Katrina. 5 years later and the New Orleans duo return with ‘Common Era’ and rather that pitch themselves well into the future it seems they have retreated to the post punk past. The electronic washes remain but now a voice occupies the foreground offering some hope to shore up the desolation. Belong have moved on but have conspired to restrain their unique sense of atmosphere – eerie and carrying a deep sense of loss. Perhaps it might be best not to listen to this alone and anyway it needs to be heard by as many people as possible. KD
