For a while (well just over 2 years) it sounded so good but a complete lack of chart action meant that Lou Hickey and Jon Lawler (yes, he of the Fratellis) went their separate ways last year. Thankfully they left some spicy material behind, a cover of the Roses ‘I Am The Resurrection’ was clever and this their big single should really have seen them break. In the end it did unfortunately. Given the bombast of Lawler’s main band it seems a tad odd that Codeine Velvet Club didn’t have a ready made market. And it’s not like they didn’t have good money behind them as you’ll see from the cinematic touches on their video below. But then perhaps showing loyalty to the new pairing might have involved revealing a feminine side that was better off kept internalised. KD
