The Middle East – Hunger Song

The following thought struck me while listening to the Middle East’s ‘Hunger Song’; I hear the train a comin’, it’s rollin’ ’round the bend, and I ain’t seen the sunshine, since, I don’t know when, I’m stuck in Folsom Prison. Now, there are major divergences between both songs (Rohin Jones vocals for one) but there’s no doubting the parallels in the momentum. It is by a long stretch the best thing I’ve heard from the Townsville (Australian east coast) band and bodes well for their second LP ‘I Want That You Are Always Happy’ which has already done quite well back home, but their lack of outright dominance suggests they are in need of a break stateside where the album will be released next week. ‘Hunger Song’ could be just the one to tip the balance and probably have the band drinking coffee and smoking big cigars. A double header with Fleet Foxes might be a swell idea. KD
