It’d probably take more than Ryan McFun (sic), his Ruby Suns and a bowl of dusty fruit to roll us back into the summer but my how these New Zealanders (so not everything from there is all black!) do envisage a calender year without spittle from the sky or frost underfoot. Of course we’ll be forever partial to them because they generously bequeathed to one of our first compilations (in the form of the woozy joy that was ‘There Are Birds’) but they also throw new gilded joys into the mix every few years so our love is ongoing. Just listen to what can be found on last years ‘Fight Softly’, their tad overlooked 3rd long player. If there were awards for genius McPhun (well again) would need a mantelpiece to rival the bar in Dusseldorf’s Altstadt venue. KD
