Old Smile – Brief Conversation
The main source of joy from this blogging lark is uncovering something fresh from a band you’ve never heard of. Sure, it’s great when Lower Dens unleash another classic but then what’s new. Today’s bundle of happiness comes from Tom Herman who recorded an album with the meagrest of modern recording technology. That it sounds like a slick affair is made all the more extraordinary when you find out that the young fella spliced some playing from his grandad (now deceased) and father culled from an age old tape recording of a family gathering. Probably affords the recording a certain ghostly quality and Herman Jr. plays up to this atmospheric turn with his own haunting vocals. Not a million miles from Youth Lagoon territory, but then the Herman’s have been doing this for generations.KD
