Nicely Nicely – 49 Cigars
It sounds a good bit like ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ but when you’re looking for inspiration there aren’t many better options out there. It might surprise you that ’49 Cigars’ comes from a b-side on an obscure 1982 single from Londoner Nick Nicely called ‘Hilly Fields (1892)’. Nicely operated in a scene that lacked the contemporary distribution channels available to today’s up and comers which is a shame for he was definitely something of a maverick. EMI did take some interest for a while in the early 80′s but Nicely’s talent was ultimately undervalued. That is until the altogether (splendid) retro gazing label Captured Tracks took an interest and compiled many of Nicely’s recordings on ‘Elegant Daze’. One never knows when ones luck is gonna turn.
