New Order – Temptation

Coming as it did a full 10 months before ‘Blue Monday’ ‘Temptation’ nonetheless pointed the way forward for New Order. The death of Ian Curtis 2 years previously meant that the remaining members of Joy Division hard to find their own direction if they were to succeed without their former frontman. Barney Sumner duly took over on vocals and Gillian Gilbert was recruited on keyboards to bring a dancier edge to proceedings. It worked because ‘Temptation’ is a world away from the doom-laden soundscapes of Joy Division. Remember this was 1982 and so ‘Temptation’ must have seemed like a bolt from the blue. Alright, it was still going to be an outside bet for Ibiza domination but there is no denying its infectious rhythms. That and the fact that it takes a delicious 59 seconds before we hear a single unmuffled word. KD
