Sally Shapiro – He Keeps Me Alive

The role of the producer can’t be underestimated in much of what comes out of the euro pop stable. In some ways they reduce the role played by the singers of their songs to that of glamorous figurehead. Sally Shapiro adds a new twist to the story though, the face without a name (it’s not Sally you see) is not happy with all the media palaver that goes with launching a pop career so instead she lets the music (and the mystique) create the buzz. And it has worked, but behind the intrigue lies a quality combo. Johan Agebjörn is the songwriter/producer and his Swedish sidekick provides the fluffy and utterly adorable vocals. The synths are no slouches either and are primed for conquering Saturday night dancefloors. ‘He Keeps Me Alive’ could be St. Etienne were they to push the euroticket even further. The fact that it is a cover of Swedish twee heads Nixon should also appeal to a bespeckled audience not normally used to wigging to such glittering wonders. Take your hands out of your pockets and put them up in the air right away. KD
