There are lots of reasons to love Canada’s Said The Whale. The one that snagged me initially is the fact that they have released a free Christmas EP every year for the last 4 years. Yep, sold, favourite new band. Of course I’m prone to such declarations on an almost daily basis but then moving beyond the tinsel you discover that Said The Whale are as childlike and wide-eyed for the majority of rest of the year as well. How else can you explain the twinkle of ‘Goodnight Moon’ which manages to wrap quiet lullaby with Doris Day with c’mon everybody get your hands in the air and sing loudly together. Since their last LP in 2009 they’ve released an EP and scooped best new band at this year’s coveted Juno awards. Seem to be going places so let’s hope they lose none of their undeniable magic. KD
