The word Carroll drums up lots of memories, a hotel manager with a keen line in sarcasm for one and the cigarettes of the same plural name for another. Given the title of this song the latter was particularly prevalent in my thoughts, those ones that saw a teenage boy with his jumper cuffs over his mouth in a vain attempt to counteract the nicotine habits of his fellow school bus travellers. Thankfully that’s where the unpleasantries end as the Travis-esque rumble of these Minnesota lads clears the air and mops up any vestiges of broken lung. ‘Lead Ballon’ is their second single and given the resplendent differentiation to be found on its predecessor ‘Sticks’ Carroll could reasonably be described as smoking.
