As if 13 years between releases wasn’t enough Limerick man Richard D. James has just marked his return with a classic slice of accessible electronica in ‘Minipops’ (and assorted codes with digits) which will form part of his comeback ‘Syro’ album. It’s quite the surprise given how completely off the wall and impenetrable Aphex Twin can be. But in ‘Goon Gumpas’, ‘Donkey Rhubarb’ and much of the ‘Richard D. James’ album he proved that it doesn’t always have to be the sound of churning industrial machines. ‘Donkey Rhubarb’ navigates through a sea of synthetic steel drums and things that go squirt in the night to create a frenzy of excitement. It is a joy that is made even more so when you view it within the context of a video featuring oversized wrench-wielding teddy bears. KD
