Public Service Broadcasting – The Other Side

Songs with a serious narrative can be drab affairs, getting bogged down in their own sense of self-importance. Not always the case mind you and what narrative could as awe inspiring as space travel, with early space travel surely up there with the theme of choice for those looking to catch the listener’s attention. And so London’s Public Service Broadcasting have mined the archives of the British Film Institute recordings of those mind blowing days on last year’s ‘The Race For Space’ LP. As you’d expect it is an otherworldly experience and while the fuzzy ground control utterings leave you gripped PSB add the necessary electronic atmosphere to seal the deal. ‘The Other Side’ is the most effective union of old and new with Apollo 8’s first visit to the darkside of the moon in 1968 taking your breath away while the cascading electro ripples build the tension to an audacious climax. This is quite unlike anything you’ll hear all year and it may even infiltrate your own person narrative for some time to come. KD
