I listened first while being slightly taken by something else but that distraction was put in the halfpenny place as soon as Austin’s Emily Shirley flexed her array of melodies and in the process approximated a countrier version of the Carpenters. Not only is the production pristine but ‘Eyes in the Dark’ just hangs on every word of the treasured guidebook that details how to nail old school songwriting, namely a beautiful lead into a chorus to have the listener swooning.
